What we do
The Drugs Awareness Campaign (DAC) provides healthy alternatives to occupy young people's free time and make popular leisure activities more affordable and accessible. Its educational goal is to get much needed drugs and sexual health information to both young people and parents in a friendly environment.
DAC organize events, (sports tournaments, youth disco's, ice skating etc.) in drug free environments which young people find attractive to attend. Drugs and Sexual Health information are supplied by local relevant agencies who deal with the target age group of 8 14 year olds and their parents/guardians.
DAC are continuing to gain support of well-known personalities and performers ("teen heroes") who young people see as role models to help get the message across that 'Its Cool to be Aware'.
Two strong messages came out of the governments consultation for the 2008 drug strategy: 'Drugs protecting families and communities'. 1st Edition.
- Parents wanted better support to educate their children about drugs and to know what action to take if their child gets involved with drugs.
- Young people were clear that they wanted places to go and things to do so that they did not start using drugs because there was nothing better to do.
The Drugs Awareness Campaign objectives are to fulfil both these requirements via healthy events in fun locations and providing drug and sexual health information for the target audience.
